“Gone are the days when a student is just working in his or her own lab. The future has a kind of interdisciplinary convergent skill set requirement, where you have a deep understanding and experience and expertise in one skill, but you have a broader understanding of other skill sets.”

Inverse Design Training in Advanced and Sustainable Composites

Where innovation meets education. Our pioneering research leverages the power of artificial intelligence to transform composite materials and manufacturing processes. Join us in shaping the future of sustainable engineering, empowering the next generation of problem solvers with the essential skills for the AI-driven era.

Our Mission

Our mission is to advance the frontiers of composite materials and manufacturing through cutting-edge AI research and inclusive, interdisciplinary education. By equipping students with a unique “DNA-shaped” skill set, we prepare them to tackle complex, real-world challenges in the AI age while fostering a culture of merit and innovation.

IDeAS Composites Goals

  • Goal 1: Catalyze interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI and the inverse design of composites and manufacturing innovation.

  • Goal 2: Explore a combined graduate and undergraduate student training model comprising a composites inverse design capstone and a research-centric RD&D project centering on AI-enabled inverse composites materials and manufacturing process design applied to industry problems.

  • Goal 3: Create a merit, equitable, environment fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in which trainees are prepared for careers requiring a unique “DNA-shaped” skill set.

  • Goal 4: Establish an innovative, interdisciplinary education program to:

  • Train the current workforce to enhance its knowledge and foster dissemination of AI methods and principles in the composites engineering community.

  • Prepare next-generation composites engineering graduates (50 by year 5) who will have AI-enabled inverse design expertise and skills necessary to meet the unique challenges of the coming AI age and thrive in the composites industry
